Ecaille plural écailles, scale (of fish, reptile), shell (of tortoise, oyster)

Ecaille is an antique nursing chair from the second part of the 19thcentury (1850-1900) also known as a ‘chauffeuse’ or so-called ‘nursing chair’. The front has been upholstered with a new fabric from the French brand Pierre Frey, called Le Manach. The back of the chair has been covered with an Uzbek Suzani fabric. Suzanis are embroidered pieces of cloth made by women in the region of Central Asia. They are an important part of a girl’s dowry and are also used for decorative purposes in Central Asian households. On this specific chair we see a teapot, the teapot represents in the Uzbek culture hospitality and abundance.  An unbelievable amount of time and care goes into the making of each suzani.
